TESTING PROCEDURE:

I want to know the heaviest weight you can currently lift at the time of your test. Your goal in the competition is to increase your weight lifted as much as you can from your test lift, so testing earlier is better! :D

If you haven’t done a 1RM test before, here is my preferred method:

Before you start: Use whatever accessibility tools or lifting gear you will be using for the competition.

1. Start by doing a set at lower weights with more reps, with lower effort. Take a weight you know you could do for 15 or more reps and do 10, for example. Increase that weight, reduce the reps. Maybe five reps at an 8-10 rep weight. Then, two reps at a weight closer to what you think your max is, like a 4-5 rep weight.

2. Now start doing your 1 rep sets. Increase by an amount you’re confident with and go for it. Take 3-5 minute rest between sets at this point and keep increasing until failure, then mark down the biggest weight you successfully lifted.

3. Fill in the form!

This will take a while. Tests of a single lift can take upwards of a half hour depending on how well you know your lifting limits.

NOTE: If testing bench or squat, make sure you have at least one person with you to as a spotter or use the safety bars on the rack to make sure you can bail from the lift safely. If you haven’t bailed a squat or bench before, PRACTICE AT LOWER WEIGHTS FIRST! Be safe!
